They are an easy way of modernising kitchen islands, cupboards or units or giving your bathroom a more contemporary feel. They are versatile and subtle, yet hugely effective in giving any space the ‘wow’ factor without major effort.

Plinth Lights are perfect for recessing into any space our lights will sit flush to your wooden or metal plinth. These provide a smart and bright light that will help to bring your kitchen to life.

Plinth lights, or kickboard lights as they’re otherwise known, are small and unobtrusive lights that are installed to light up your kickboards, skirting boards, or cupboards. Depending on where you place them, they can provide ambient light to an area, or even improve the safety of a shadowy spot.

They can be the extra touch of style that adds a modern feel to your kitchen, bathroom, or wherever else you decide to place them. LED plinth lights are built to last, as LED lightbulbs tend to have a far longer lifespan than halogen lights. They’re also energy-efficient and can be very bright, depending on your preferences.

What Are Plinth Lights?

We are often asked what are plinth lights or what are kickboard lights. They are a small, unobtrusive, low-level under cabinet lighting product commonly installed to lights your kickboards, bathroom cupboards, skirting boards etc. They are an ideal choice if you want to add ambience to a space, and, depending on placement, can also add an element of safety by softly illuminating those areas which are usually in shadow – such as backdoor stairs.

How to fit plinth lights

The first thing to do is to measure the space where you’re planning to install your lights. From here, you can select the correct light and fixture, without any unnecessary bother when it comes to installing them.

Then, drill a small hole into your plinth or kickboard that is just big enough for you to push the plinth light in.

Before drilling, it’s always best to mark the area so that you know exactly what you need to cut. If the hole is too large, the lights won’t sit as nicely and if the hole is too small, it won’t fit at all. Be cautious, it’s easier to make the hole bigger than it is to make it smaller.

From here, you can either connect the light into an ordinary socket, or you can wire it to the LED Driver that will, in turn, be connected to the mains. This would allow you to operate the lights with a switch.

How to Wire Plinth Lights to a Switch?

First of all, if you are unsure about connecting your lights to the mains and don’t know what you’re doing, then you should always contact a trained electrician to do it for you. Incorrectly connecting anything to the mains can be extremely dangerous, either by hurting you in the process or by causing an electrical fire further down the line.

However, if you’re confident in your abilities, then it is possible to wire plinth lights to a switch. This will allow you to control them from a traditional switch on the wall, rather than having to find the socket that they’re connected to.

The easiest way to do this is to buy plinth lights that come with a separate LED Driver, which regulates the amount of power they use and which will allow you to simply connect the lights to the mains circuit.

Find an appropriate nearby power outlet, then disconnect the power supply to that outlet. Connect the LED driver to the mains power supply by connecting the correct wires to the primary side of the driver (neutral to the N terminal and line to the L terminal.

Then, to connect the plinth light to an LED Driver, measure, mark, and drill the holes as normal, and then remove the kickboard. Attach the wires from the LED lighting to the matching terminals on the secondary side of the driver.

The Benefits of a LED Plinth Light

Having the right indoor lighting matters and while they are mainly installed due to their decorative and mood-enhancing properties, they also bring a number of other benefits to your plans.

When installed correctly, plinth lights have the power to highlight certain areas of your room. For example, if you add them to your kitchen, you will have a nice and easy way of highlighting the colour and texture of the kitchen floor by using our kickboard lights.
