These often have limited natural light, which means automatic lighting is going to be a lifesaver.

A good combination would be a ceiling light with an integrated motion sensor for even coverage across the entire staircase, plus compact wall-mounted sensor lights positioned along the staircase to add character.

I’d also choose warm white lighting (around 3000K) to help make the space more cosy despite the tight space.

Open-Plan Homes

In spaces like this, the staircase is often visible from other spaces of the home: living room, dining area, or kitchen. This means that when you add stair lighting, it’s going to be part of the overall interior design.

Layering different lighting types usually delivers the best result.

You can have ceiling lights for general brightness when needed, then layer it with recessed stair lights for subtle step illumination. Or you can use LED strip lights beneath each tread to create a floating effect.
