Accessibility at Simple Lighting
We want everyone to be able to browse, choose, and buy lighting from us without barriers. This page explains what we've done to make our website accessible, where we know we could do better, and how to get in touch if something isn't working for you.
Our approach
Accessibility isn't a box we tick once. It's something we work on continuously as we build and update the site. When we make changes to the theme, we check that the work we've done on accessibility still holds. When we find a problem, we fix it.
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. We haven't put the site through formal certification, so we can't claim we've met every criterion, but it's the standard we work towards.
What we've done
The site has been built with screen reader users, keyboard-only users, and people using assistive technology in mind. Specifically:
Navigation and structure
- A "Skip to content" link appears at the top of every page, letting keyboard users bypass the header
- Every page has a proper heading structure: one main heading, with sub-sections nested below
- Landmarks (main content area, footer, navigation) are marked up so screen readers can jump to them
- The site works fully with a keyboard. You can reach every link, button, and form field by tabbing, and the currently focused element is always visibly outlined
Forms and interactive elements
- Every form field has a visible label
- Required fields are marked both visually and for assistive technology
- Error messages are linked to the field they relate to
- Touch targets on buttons and links meet the 44 by 44 pixel minimum recommended for touch devices
Dynamic content
- When you apply a filter on a collection page, the new product count is announced to screen readers
- When you add, remove, or change the quantity of an item in your basket, the update is announced
- When you send us a message through the contact form, the confirmation is announced
- Error messages (such as a product being out of stock) are announced immediately
Images and media
- Product images have descriptive alternative text
- Decorative icons and images are hidden from screen readers so they don't add clutter
- You can zoom in on any page up to the browser's maximum without the layout breaking
Language and reading
- The site is set to British English so screen readers use the correct pronunciation and speech patterns
- Text can be resized using your browser's zoom without losing content or breaking the page layout
What we're still working on
We want to be honest about where we know there's room to improve.
- Formal WCAG 2.2 AA testing: we've audited the site ourselves but haven't had an independent conformance audit. This is something we plan to do.
- Colour contrast: we follow good practice on text and button colours, but we haven't tested every possible colour combination across the site against WCAG contrast ratios.
- Third-party content: parts of the site use external tools (such as our newsletter sign-up, review widgets, and payment pages at checkout). These are outside our direct control and their accessibility depends on the provider.
- Video content: we don't currently add captions or transcripts to videos embedded on the site. If you need information from a video in another format, please get in touch.
If you spot something that isn't covered here, please let us know.
