Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between COB and regular LED strips?
COB (Chip-on-Board) LED strips use multiple LED chips packed closely together on a single circuit board, creating a completely smooth, dotless line of light with no visible spots. Regular LED strips have individual LEDs spaced along the strip, which can create a dotted effect. COB strips also typically offer better colour rendering (CRI >90) and more even light distribution, making them ideal for professional installations where light quality matters.
Do I need a special controller for RGB LED strips?
Yes, RGB LED strips require a controller to change colours and create effects. The controller acts as the brain that tells each colour channel (red, green, blue) how bright to be. Most RGB controllers come with a remote control, and many newer models also offer smartphone app control via WiFi or Bluetooth. Simple Lighting stocks controllers suitable for all types of RGB and RGBW strips.
Can LED strip lights be cut to size?
Yes, most LED strips can be cut to your exact requirements at designated cutting points, usually marked every 2.5cm to 10cm depending on the strip type. You'll see small copper pads and scissor symbols where it's safe to cut. However, once cut, you may need additional connectors or soldering to extend or reconnect sections, so it's worth planning your layout carefully before cutting.
What IP rating do I need for bathroom LED strips?
For bathrooms, you'll need at least IP65-rated LED strips, though IP67 is better for areas very close to water sources like around baths or showers. IP65 strips are protected against water jets from any direction, while IP67 strips can actually be briefly submerged. Always check your local building regulations and consider consulting a qualified electrician for bathroom installations.
How do I choose between 12V and 24V LED strips?
24V LED strips are generally better for longer runs (over 5 metres) as they suffer less voltage drop and maintain consistent brightness throughout the length. 12V strips are fine for shorter installations and have more widely available accessories and controllers. 24V strips also tend to run more efficiently and produce less heat, making them ideal for professional installations or where you're running multiple strips from one power supply.
Do LED strips need aluminium profiles?
While not always essential, aluminium profiles are highly recommended as they provide heat dissipation (extending LED life), physical protection, and a professional finish with diffusers that eliminate hotspots. They're particularly important for high-output strips, permanent installations, or anywhere the strip might be touched or damaged. Simple Lighting stocks various profile styles including surface-mount, recessed, and corner options.
How long do LED strip lights typically last?
Quality LED strips typically last 25,000 to 50,000 hours when properly installed with adequate heat management. This translates to around 10-15 years of normal domestic use. Factors affecting lifespan include heat buildup (use aluminium profiles), power supply quality, and operating conditions. All Simple Lighting LED strips are tested in the UK and come with warranties of up to 5 years, giving you confidence in their longevity.
Can I connect multiple LED strip reels together?
Yes, but there are limits depending on the strip's wattage and your power supply capacity. Most 5-metre reels can be connected end-to-end using connectors or soldering, but you'll need to ensure your driver can handle the total wattage. For very long runs, it's often better to use a more powerful central power supply with parallel connections rather than daisy-chaining strips, as this maintains consistent brightness throughout.
