To replace a GU10 light bulb, first switch off the power and let the bulb cool. Follow your light fitting's instructions to access the bulb, gently push and turn it anticlockwise to release it, then fit a compatible replacement and turn it clockwise to secure it. Never force a stuck bulb or disturb the wiring.
This guide covers an intact, replaceable GU10 bulb. If the bulb is broken, the holder is damaged or you cannot safely reach the fitting, stop and ask a qualified electrician for help. Browse our GU10 LED bulbs once you have checked the replacement requirements below.
What is a GU10 Light Bulb?
A GU10 is a spotlight bulb with two short pins that lock into a matching holder with a push-and-twist action. GU10 bulbs are used in compatible spotlights and downlights, and are available in LED versions.
Check the old bulb's markings and the fitting's instructions before choosing a replacement. The base, voltage, dimensions and permitted wattage must suit the fitting. A similar-looking bulb is not enough to confirm compatibility.
How to replace a GU10 light bulb safely
Check that your fitting has a replaceable GU10 bulb before you begin. An integrated LED light may require a different maintenance procedure. Choose a compatible LED light bulb and follow the instructions supplied with the fitting.
Step 1: Switch off the power and let the bulb cool
For a fixed ceiling light, switch off the light and its circuit at the consumer unit before changing the bulb. Make sure nobody can switch it back on while you work. Unplug a portable lamp from its socket. If you cannot identify the correct circuit or are unsure how to isolate the supply, ask a qualified electrician.
Allow the bulb and fitting to cool completely, including when changing an LED bulb. LEDs produce heat too. Ordinary household gloves are not a substitute for switching off the electrical supply.
Step 2: Use suitable access equipment
Use a suitable stepladder in good condition on a firm, level surface, with its locking devices engaged. Follow its instructions, keep a secure supported position and avoid overreaching. Do not stand on a chair or improvised platform. If you cannot reach and handle the bulb safely, arrange help.
Step 3: Access and remove the old bulb
Some fittings have a removable bezel, cover or retaining ring. Follow the fitting's instructions to release it while supporting the bulb. Do not pull out the complete downlight or disturb its wiring just to reach the bulb.
With the bulb cool and power off, grip it gently, push it slightly towards the holder and turn it anticlockwise until the pins release. Withdraw it carefully without forcing it. Where the fitting manufacturer permits it, a suitable bulb-removal suction tool can help with an intact bulb that is difficult to grip.
Step 4: Fit and check the replacement
Align the new bulb's pins with the holder, push gently and turn clockwise until it is secure. Refit any retaining ring, cover or bezel as instructed. Restore the power only once the bulb and fitting are fully reassembled and you are safely clear.
If the new bulb does not work or flickers, switch the power off again before checking it. Do not repeatedly force the bulb or attempt repairs to the holder or wiring. For advice on choosing brightness, light colour and dimming, see our LED bulb buying guide.
What if a GU10 bulb is stuck or broken?
Do not use a straw or other improvised object to pry the bulb out. Check whether a retaining ring or bezel is still holding it, using the fitting's instructions. If an intact bulb will not release gently, leave the power off and ask a qualified electrician for help.
If the glass is broken, the base has separated or the holder shows damage, stop. Do not reach into the holder, insert tools into it or push wires back into the fitting. This is beyond a straightforward bulb replacement.
What is the brightest GU10 LED bulb?
Compare the lumen output of the exact bulb you are considering. Lumens describe light output; watts describe power consumption. Check beam angle too, as it affects how the light is spread. A higher-wattage bulb is not automatically the right replacement for your fitting.
These existing options offer different outputs and beam angles. Check each product's dimensions, dimming information and fitting restrictions before ordering:
- 10W GU10 LED bulb
- Pack of ten 7.5W GU10 LED bulbs with a two-year warranty
- 6W Pro GU10 LED bulb in cool, warm or natural white
The linked 10W bulb and 7.5W ten-pack are specified for open fittings and must not be used in enclosed fittings. Check the exact product and fitting instructions rather than assuming every GU10 LED suits every downlight. If your light uses a dimmer, confirm that both the replacement bulb and dimmer are compatible.
How long do GU10 LED bulbs last?
Use the rated life stated for the exact bulb, together with its operating conditions and warranty terms. There is no single 30,000–50,000-hour lifespan that applies to every GU10 LED. For example, the linked 7.5W ten-pack currently lists a 20,000-hour lifespan.
LED light output can gradually reduce over time, which is called lumen depreciation. A complete bulb can also stop working because an electronic component fails. Rated life is not a promise that every bulb will run for that many hours or continue working beyond it.
Using a bulb for fewer hours each day can spread its operating hours over more calendar years. Heat, ventilation and suitability for the fitting also matter, so follow the product's installation and usage limits.
