Let me give you a series of examples so you can picture this more clearly.

My advice is: Do not choose between one and three hours simply because one is cheaper or because three sounds safer.

Always choose the duration that is appropriate for the premises.

Your emergency lighting strategy should consider the building, occupancy, evacuation arrangements, fire risk assessment, and relevant standards and guidance.

Common Mistakes That Reduce Emergency Lighting Duration

1. Assuming every emergency light provides three hours. Not every fitting has the same rated duration, and not every installation requires the same duration.

2. Never carrying out full-duration testing. A fitting can switch on perfectly during a short test and still fail to reach its full rated period.

3. Ignoring ageing batteries. Batteries are not forever. Reduced duration is a warning sign, not a suggestion.

4. Replacing batteries with unsuitable alternatives. Simple. The replacement battery must be compatible with the fitting.

5. Failing to maintain test records. If tests are happening but nobody records them, you lose a valuable maintenance trail, which is a red flag during inspections.
