At Simple Lighting, we have various waterproof LED strip lights, including:
- Waterproof COB LED strip
- IP65 LED tape
- Outdoor LED neon flex
- Single-colour options
- Tunable white options
- Colour-changing RGB options
Choose the right outdoor LED strip based on its location, water exposure, and the finish you need.
Types of Outdoor LED Strip Lights
Different outdoor installations need different strips. Exposure, visibility, and installation size help determine the best option.
Waterproof COB LED Strip
A waterproof COB LED strip creates a smooth, continuous line of light with almost no visible LED dots. It works especially well where the strip remains visible after installation.
IP67 versions provide stronger protection in exposed outdoor areas. Choose from single-colour, tunable white and colour-changing options.
COB strip is a good choice when you want:
- A smooth, dot-free finish
- Greater protection from water
- Multiple colour and control options
An LED aluminium profile adds physical protection and creates a cleaner finish.
IP65 LED Tape for Sheltered Outdoor Use
IP65 LED tape has a protective coating against rain and splashes. Its slim design suits sheltered outdoor positions, including soffits, handrails, covered pergolas and protected ledges. It also usually costs less per metre than more heavily sealed strip, making it practical for longer covered runs.
Use IP65 tape where the strip is sheltered from direct weather, and water is unlikely to collect around the installation.
Outdoor LED Neon Flex
Outdoor LED neon flex uses a flexible silicone body to create a clean, continuous line. It suits outlines, signage, architectural edges and curved installations.
Top-bend and side-bend versions support different shapes and directions. Use matching mounting clips or other neon flex accessories to hold the strip securely and keep longer runs neat.
Colour Changing Outdoor LED Strip
RGB LED strips let you change colours using a compatible controller. RGB plus white versions also include a dedicated white channel for added flexibility.
- A colour-changing setup usually needs:
- A suitable LED driver
- An RGB or RGBW controller
- Correct waterproof connections
Browse our LED controllers to find a compatible control option for your chosen strip.
IP65 or IP67: Which Waterproof LED Strip Do You Need?
IP ratings show how well waterproof LED strip lights resist water and dust. Choose the rating that matches your installation location.
An IP65 LED strip provides protection against dust and water jets. It suits sheltered outdoor locations with limited direct water exposure.
Typical positions include:
- Under soffits
- Beneath covered pergolas
- Under sheltered handrails
- Below protected overhangs
IP67 LED strips offer protection against dust and temporary immersion under specified test conditions.
Choose IP67 for:
- Fully exposed exterior areas
- Installations close to ground level
- Positions with greater direct weather exposure
IP67 doesn't mean the light is suitable for permanent underwater use. Choose a product approved for your intended outdoor location and follow its mounting and sealing instructions. Avoid locations where water can remain around the strip unless that use is expressly supported.
The strip's IP rating is only one part of the installation. Your driver, connectors, and other electrical connections also need suitable protection.
An outdoor-rated driver can provide this. Alternatively, you can install the driver inside a suitable weatherproof enclosure. Cutting a waterproof LED strip also breaks its original seal. Reseal every cut end with suitable end caps and sealant.
Where to Use Outdoor LED Strip Lighting
Outdoor LED strip lighting can be used across domestic and commercial installations. The correct product depends on how covered or exposed each position is.
- Decking edges and steps. Many IP67 waterproof COB strips suit exposed decking edges and low-level step installations. Just make sure the product you choose is approved for those locations.
- Under handrails and coping stones. IP65 LED tapes work well where the handrail or coping stone provides shelter. Its slim format fits neatly beneath narrow edges.
- Pergolas and garden rooms. Use IP65 LED tapes beneath covered sections of pergolas and garden rooms. Choose higher IP ratings if the strip remains exposed to rain.
- Fences and raised beds. Waterproof strips are highly recommended for exposed fences and low-level raised-bed installations. Again, check if the product is made for these areas before installing it.
- Soffits and eaves. IP65 LED tape is a practical option beneath sheltered soffits and eaves. These locations usually protect against direct rainfall.
- Shopfronts and signage. Outdoor LED neon flex works well for lettering, outlines and curved commercial features. Top-bend and side-bend options support different layouts.
For garden LED strip lights or decking lights, always choose based on exposure. The location name alone doesn't determine the correct IP rating.
What You Need to Install Outdoor LED Strip Lights
An outdoor LED strip installation needs the right supporting components to work safely and reliably.
LED Driver. Choose an LED driver that matches the strip voltage and can handle the full run. Check the product page for the maximum run length before installation.
Match the driver to the strip’s voltage and total connected load. Position it in a suitable dry indoor location, or use an appropriately rated outdoor driver or suitable protective enclosure, following the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
Aluminium Profile. Aluminium profiles protect strips from knocks, keep long runs straight and create a cleaner finish. They are not waterproof, so choose one suited to your strip’s width and type.
Controller or Dimmer. Add a compatible controller or dimmer if you want brightness, tunable white, RGB or RGBW control. Make sure it works with both the strip and driver.
Connectors, End Caps and Sealant. Protect outdoor lights from moisture using suitable connectors, end caps and sealant. Reseal cut ends properly to help maintain the strip’s intended protection outdoors securely.
Our UK team can advise on cut-and-solder preparation, achievable lengths, sealing, and compatible components. Check product pages and call an electrician for mains-connection jobs.
