What is an LED power supply?
An LED power supply, also known as an LED driver, is similar to transformers for low-voltage bulbs or ballasts for fluorescent lamps. They supply LEDs with the electricity that is needed for them to perform and function at their best. You can find a non-dimmable and dimmable LED power supply with varying wattage capacities, such as a 30w LED power supply, a 50w LED power supply, and more!
LED lighting fixtures need a reliable power supply to function properly. An LED driver supplies this to LED fittings, converting alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). They guarantee that the power supply is uninterrupted and constant by compensating for the changes in electrical conductivity and temperature of the LEDs. This prevents flickering, overheating, degraded performance and colour change!
Do all LED Lights Need an LED Power Supply?
Technically, yes. All LEDs need an LED driver. However, before you start buying an LED driver, here’s what you need to know. Some LED lights have integrated drivers. Therefore, a separate driver is not needed. This is the reason why some LED fittings are mains wirable or mains powered and can be wired directly to the main power supply.
Low-voltage LED lights, like many under cabinet lights and plinth lights, do need a separate LED driver. The advantage that you can get from these fittings is when the driver breaks or malfunctions, it’s only the driver that needs a replacement. You can still use the fixture, given that it’s still functioning properly!
How do you choose an LED power supply?
There are a number of steps you need to take in order to choose the right LED power supply for your indoor lighting. You need to consider the size of the LED product’s housing or area of installation, for example. You are also going to need to determine how efficient the LED power supply is.
The environment in which the LED power supply is going to be used must be taken into account as well. After all, you don’t want to choose a power supply that is going to be placed in an environment with temperatures that fall outside of the operating range. Additionally, if your LEDs are dimmable, you’re going to need to choose a dimmable LED power supply or driver to go with them.
By taking all of this into account, you will then be able to figure out what power supply is going to be suitable for you from the products we have for sale. If this all seems like a bit of a minefield, don’t worry. All you need to do is give us a call, and we will be happy to recommend the right product for your requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an LED power supply and why do I need one?
An LED power supply, also known as an LED driver, is similar to transformers for low-voltage bulbs or ballasts for fluorescent lamps. It converts alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) and supplies LEDs with the electricity needed for them to perform at their best. LED drivers guarantee uninterrupted and constant power supply by compensating for changes in electrical conductivity and temperature, preventing flickering, overheating, and performance issues.
Do all LED lights need a separate LED power supply?
Technically, all LEDs need an LED driver, but not all need a separate one. Some LED lights have integrated drivers built in, which means they can be wired directly to mains power without needing an additional driver. Low-voltage LED lights, such as many under cabinet lights and plinth lights, do require a separate LED driver to function properly.
What's the difference between dimmable and non-dimmable LED power supplies?
A dimmable LED power supply is specifically designed to work with dimmer switches and dimmable LED fixtures, allowing you to control the brightness level. Non-dimmable LED power supplies provide constant power output and cannot adjust brightness levels. If your LEDs are dimmable, you must use a dimmable LED power supply to ensure proper functionality and avoid damage to your lighting system.
How do I choose the right wattage for my LED power supply?
To choose the correct wattage, add up the total wattage of all LED lights that will be connected to the power supply, then add 10-20% as a safety margin. For example, if you have LED strips totalling 40 watts, you should choose a 50-watt LED driver. Simple Lighting offers LED power supplies ranging from 8W to 300W to suit various applications and lighting setups.
Can I use a 12V or 24V LED driver for any LED lights?
No, you must match the voltage output of your LED driver to the voltage requirements of your LED lights. If your LEDs are designed for 12V, you need a 12V LED power supply, and similarly for 24V LEDs. Using the wrong voltage can damage your LEDs or cause them to perform poorly. Check your LED specifications before selecting a power supply.
What does IP rating mean for LED power supplies?
IP rating indicates the level of protection an LED power supply has against dust and moisture. For example, IP20-rated drivers are suitable for dry indoor locations only, whilst higher IP ratings like IP67 can withstand outdoor conditions and moisture. Choose an IP rating appropriate for your installation environment to ensure safety and longevity of your LED power supply.
What are the benefits of LED power supplies with 6-way distributors?
LED power supplies with 6-way distributors allow you to connect multiple LED lights or strips to a single driver unit, making installation cleaner and more efficient. This is particularly useful for under cabinet lighting or multiple plinth lights, as you can power several fixtures from one central power source. It reduces the need for multiple individual drivers and simplifies your lighting setup.
How long do LED power supplies typically last?
Quality LED power supplies typically last 25,000 to 50,000 hours or more, depending on usage and environmental conditions. Simple Lighting offers LED drivers with up to 3-year warranties, reflecting their reliability and build quality. The advantage of separate LED drivers is that if the power supply fails, you only need to replace the driver rather than the entire lighting fixture.
