What Is a Kinetic Switch?
A kinetic switch is a self-powered wireless switch. It generates its own power when pressed. And it sends a wireless signal to a compatible receiver, which controls the light.
Unlike traditional wall switches, it doesn't need a battery, mains wiring running to the switch, or wall chasing to install new cables. That means less disruption and a quicker installation.
Each battery-free switch pairs with a compatible receiver. Once connected, it provides reliable wireless lighting control. It's up to you where to place the switch.
Kinetic switches are ideal for homes, offices, shops, extensions and renovation projects. They offer a simple way to add or relocate light switches without the time, mess and cost of conventional wiring.
How Kinetic Switches Work
Kinetic switches are simple. Every press generates a tiny amount of electricity from the switch's movement. The electricity, in turn, instantly powers a short 433MHz wireless radio signal.
During installation, the kinetic switch is paired with a compatible receiver. The receiver is designed to recognise the signal emitted by the switch. As the receiver is wired into your lighting circuit, it turns the connected light on or off whenever you press the switch.
Most kinetic switches have a wireless range of up to 20 metres indoors and more than 80 metres outdoors in open spaces. This gives you flexible control throughout your property.
And because the switch is completely wireless and battery-free, you can install it where it's most convenient. No more running new cables or replacing batteries.
Types of Kinetic Switches
There are several types of kinetic switches available. Each is made for specific installations, lighting layouts and control requirements.
1, 2 and 3 Gang Wireless Kinetic Switches
The gang refers to the number of independent switches on the faceplate. A 1-gang kinetic switch controls one lighting circuit, a 2-gang kinetic switch controls two, and so forth. Each gang is paired with its own compatible receiver, allowing every circuit to operate independently.
White is the standard finish across this range, with IP65 options available for bathrooms, utility rooms and other wet locations.
Kinetic Grid Switches
Kinetic grid switches are designed to fit standard UK grid plate systems. They're a popular choice for electricians and installers working on properties that already use grid switches. They operate exactly like standalone kinetic switches, generating power from each press and sending a wireless signal to a compatible receiver.
They're suitable for both residential and commercial projects, making it easy to add wireless control while maintaining a consistent look.
Kinetic Switch and Receiver Kits
Kinetic switch and receiver kits are the simplest way to start a wireless lighting installation. Each kit includes a 1-gang kinetic switch and a compatible non-dimmable 5A receiver, providing everything you need for a standard setup in one box.
The receiver is essential because the switch cannot control a light on its own. If you want smart features, Wi-Fi receiver kits offer app and voice control for even greater flexibility.
Where to Use Kinetic Switches
Kinetic switches help solve common installation challenges without adding batteries or running new switch wiring. This makes them suitable for a wide range of homes and commercial projects.
Kitchen and Living Spaces
Kinetic switches make it easy to add a switch where there isn't one already. They're also ideal for retrofitting two-way switching at the opposite end of a hallway, open-plan living space or large room without rewiring existing walls.
They can be mounted on smooth surfaces such as glass kitchen islands, giving you convenient control over your LED downlights, LED strips, and under-cabinet lights. The wireless design makes future changes just as simple.
Bathrooms and Wet Rooms
IP65-rated kinetic switches pair well with lighting for bathrooms, wet rooms and other areas exposed to moisture. They provide a practical alternative to traditional pull cords while keeping installation straightforward.
They're also ideal for adding a second control point near the entrance or beside a bathroom door. Because there's no wiring inside the switch, installation is quick and tidy.
Outdoor and Garden Lighting
Outdoor kinetic switches can be mounted onto glass, brick or timber surfaces without running additional switch cables. With a wireless range of up to 80 metres outdoors in open areas, they offer flexible control across your property.
They're ideal for outdoor lighting, gardens, sheds, summer houses, garages and outbuildings. You can add convenient switching without digging trenches or installing new cable runs.
Trade Use – Renovations and Retrofits
Kinetic switches are a popular choice for renovation and commercial lighting projects. They make two-way and three-way switching much easier by removing the need to chase walls or install extra switch wiring.
They're equally useful in listed buildings where preserving existing walls is important. They also help electricians respond quickly when customers decide to move a switch position after plastering is complete.
How to Choose a Kinetic Switch and Receiver
Choosing the right kinetic switch and receiver is easy. Focus on these four things before you buy.
1. Match the gang count to your lighting
Choose a 1-gang switch for one lighting circuit, a 2-gang switch for two, or a 3-gang switch for three. Each gang operates independently and requires its own compatible receiver.
2. Decide if you need dimming
If you only want to turn lights on and off, choose a non-dimmable receiver. If you want adjustable brightness, you'll need a separate dimmer or a dimmable kinetic switch paired with a compatible receiver.
3. Choose between RF and Wi-Fi control
An RF receiver provides reliable wireless control from your kinetic switch. A Wi-Fi receiver adds app and voice control but requires a permanent power supply and a 2.4 GHz network.
4. Check the receiver specification
Always choose a receiver with a maximum wattage higher than the total wattage of the connected bulbs. The receiver is installed near the light fitting or within the lighting circuit, while the kinetic wireless switch can be mounted wherever it's most convenient.
Installing a Kinetic Switch
Installing a kinetic switch is a simple two-stage process. The receiver requires wiring, but the switch itself does not.
1. Install the receiver
A qualified electrician should wire the receiver into the lighting circuit. This involves connecting the live, neutral and load to the light fitting.
Installing receivers also includes mains electrical work, and the project must comply with UK Part P Building Regulations. The unit should be placed near the light fitting or within the lighting circuit, not behind the switch.
2. Pair and mount the switch
Pairing is done by pressing the pairing button on the receiver and then pressing the kinetic switch. After this, the switch can be fixed in place using the supplied adhesive pad or mounted to a standard back box with screws. Because the kinetic switch is completely battery-free, it never needs wiring.
