Why Should You Install Under Cabinet Lighting?
Since there are so many options you can choose from, you might be wondering - why exactly should I pick under cabinet LED lighting for the kitchen? While there are plenty of reasons, here are some of the most predominant ones:
Provides Additional Illumination
In many cases, the overhead lighting is not strong enough to be used when doing tasks that require you to see clearly or to illuminate those hard to reach corners in high-use rooms. Often the main light ends up being behind you as you work or the shadow is casting on your work area, making it hard to see when cooking or preparing food. By placing LED lights under the kitchen cabinets, you can have focused light exactly where you need it the most.
Less Heat Output
If you were considering adding lighting under your kitchen cabinets, then you should know that LEDs are your best bet. Light-emitting diodes use all the energy for the light, meaning they don't have the same heat output as other bulbs. This also means they are safer to use in the kitchen where they will be close to food which could be sensitive to heat.
Beautiful Design and Ambiance
Installing lighting under kitchen cabinets instead of having additional ceiling pendants or floor lamps makes the best use of space. They are usually completely hidden from view until turned on, which means that they are a perfect addition to a room with a more modern and minimalist design. Depending on the type of LED under cabinet lighting installed, you can give your kitchen a cosy feel or opt for a more contemporary look with a cooler tone.
What Things Should You Take into Consideration When Choosing the Right Under Cabinet Lighting?
Choosing the right lighting fixture for any project can be a quite challenging task - especially since there are several factors that you need to consider. Here are a few details to help you make the right decision for kitchen under cabinet lighting:
Recessed vs Surface Mounted
The LED under cabinet lighting can be either recessed or surface-mounted. When installing a recessed light, you'll need to cut a hole in the cabinet or the surface, which leaves little or no part of the fixture visible. A surface-mounted light is easier to install and requires no cutting or modifying of cabinets. Both of our recessed and surface fixtures come in different designs and styles.
Mini Link LED Strip Lights
Another option for your under cabinet lighting is the simple to install LED strip light. They come in handy DIY kits and are available in different lengths. To make the light fit your cabinets, simply measure the length of your cabinet where you are planning on installing the lights and cut off the same length from your LED strip.
Multiple Colour Options
All of our LED lights come in different colour options, including various temperatures of white, namely warm, natural, neutral and cool white. We also have under cabinet lighting which provides multicoloured light, so you can get as creative as you like in the kitchen. Additionally, these LED lights can be adjusted using two types of controllers - knob controllers or remote RGB controllers. Which one you choose depends solely on what you believe to be more practical.
To put it simply, an IP rating shows you how much the product you are purchasing is prone to liquids and solids. The IP rating, short for Ingress Protection or International Protection, consists of two numbers - the first one being the level of protection against the solids, and the second one being the level of protection against the liquids. While there are no official regulations when it comes to how high the IP rating should be in the lighting used in the kitchen, having one that is highly resistant to dirt and dust definitely wouldn't hurt.
The under cabinet lighting is a low voltage lighting, with either 12V or 24V required. The low voltage means that you can easily use smaller light fixtures - a perfect solution when it comes to placing lighting under the cabinets, full of tight spaces. Depending on the lighting fixture you choose, you may require a LED driver to convert mains voltage to the appropriate lower level.
CRI stands for colour rendering index, and it's a scale, ranging from 0 to 100, which tells you how 'accurate' items look under that particular light. Sounds confusing? Well, CRI can be a little tricky, which is why the best way of explaining what we mean is by giving you an example.
Let's say that you have a tomato, and are trying to see how ripe it is. A light that is perfectly accurate will show you the colour of the tomato as it is in natural light. An inaccurate light, on the other hand, will make the tomato's colour different, which means that despite your efforts, you might have a hard time judging correctly whether the tomato is ripe.
When it comes to the under cabinet kitchen lighting, you should choose products with a CRI over 90. The under cabinet light's CRI is located either on the packaging or on the product specification sheet.
Our LED under cabinet lighting can be controlled in a variety of ways, including a mini link in-line switch and motion sensors. With motion sensors, you can turn the lights off and on with just a wave of a hand, which is a great option for a room where your hands may get wet or covered in food! Dimmer switches are also useful to change the brightness of the lights and in doing so, create different moods. Dimmable under cabinet lights also help you to cut down on energy usage.
